Biography of Artist:
Edward Joseph Finley Timmons 1882 - 1960
An American painter, Timmons was born in Janesville, Wisconsin on January 6, 1882. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and traveled to Europe, where he continued his studies in Italy, France, Holland and Spain with Sorolla.
Timmons settled into a studio in Chicago, where he became well-known. In 1915, he exhibited in the Panama Pacific Exhibition in San Francisco. In the 1930's and 1940's, he painted in the Monterey, California area where he was active with the Carmel Art Association, and painted with Arthur Hill Gilbert, his brother-in-law. Timmons died in Evanston, Illinois on January 31, 1960.
His paintings on oil were known for genre, landscape, portraits and figures. His subjects included coastal views, figures,, genre-human activity, landscapes, portraits and snow scenes. His associations included the Art Students League, the Carmel Art Association, and the Society of Independent Artists. His exhibitions included the Art Institute of Chicago, The Carmel Art Association, The National Academy of Design, The Panama Pacific Exhibition, and the Pennsylvania Academy Exhibition.
